Opposition Senator Lambert Brown is urging the Government to revisit a 2023 proposal to raise stipends for non-executive senators from $53,000 to $148,000 per sitting. He argues the increase is justified due to rising living and transportation costs and notes that these senators have not benefited from recent compensation reviews.
The proposal was previously withdrawn by former Finance Minister Nigel Clarke following public backlash. Brown also pointed out that some senators incur significant travel expenses commuting to Kingston.
Additionally, he criticized new tax measures affecting public sector workers. Finance Minister Fayval Williams has defended the policy, stating it reflects current economic conditions while maintaining certain exemptions.
