The Jamaica Public Service Company Limited (JPS) is encouraging customers to be more mindful of their electricity consumption in the coming months, warning that rising fuel costs could lead to higher bills.
Customer Service Area Manager for the eastern region, Ruthlyn Johnson, is advising households and businesses to adopt energy-saving practices as global conditions continue to influence electricity pricing.
According to the utility provider, increases are anticipated in the fuel charge portion of customers’ bills. The company attributes the expected adjustments to ongoing international developments, particularly the conflict in the Middle East, which has contributed to volatility in global oil prices.
Johnson noted that fluctuations in fuel costs are likely to persist, which may continue to impact electricity rates over time.
Meanwhile, concerns over rising energy costs are also being felt within the fuel distribution sector. The Jamaica Gasoline Retailers Association (JGRA) is preparing for increased capital outlays as it works to secure adequate fuel supplies for the local market.
The association says the ripple effects of the international situation are expected to place additional financial pressure on retailers, who must maintain supply despite changing global market conditions.
