Residents across sections of eastern Jamaica were awakened early Wednesday morning following a 4.4 magnitude earthquake recorded near St Thomas.
According to the Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies (UWI), the Eastern Jamaica earthquake occurred at approximately 3:20 a.m. Preliminary data indicated that tremors were felt in several communities across the eastern region of the island.
The Earthquake Unit reported that the epicentre was located about 10 kilometres south of Albion in St Thomas. The quake was measured at a depth of 11 kilometres beneath the surface.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or major damage following the tremor. Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity and are encouraging residents to remain alert.
Jamaica lies within an active seismic zone and experiences minor earthquakes periodically throughout the year.
