KINGSTON, Jamaica — An alleged gang leader was fatally shot and two firearms recovered during a pre-dawn joint police-military operation in Board Villa, Denham Town, on Friday morning.
The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Jermaine Malcolm, otherwise called ‘Balla’, of Fourth Street, Trench Town, Kingston 12. Police say Malcolm also went by the alias Jermaine Morris.
Malcolm was reportedly a high-ranking member of the Brooklyn Gang, and intelligence suggests he was also the cousin of a senior member of the One Away Gang, another criminal network operating in the community. Lawmen believe the seized weapons were linked to the gang’s arsenal.
Reports are that about 6:00 a.m., an intelligence-driven operation was carried out. During the sweep, Malcolm was seen jumping from a rooftop in an attempt to escape. He was confronted by the police, during which he allegedly pulled a firearm and pointed it at the team.
The police opened fire, hitting him several times. A black and silver Sarsilmaz 9mm pistol, along with six cartridges, was recovered at the scene.
Malcolm was taken to the Kingston Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A subsequent search of the area led to the discovery of a Uzi sub-machine gun with an empty magazine. No members of the security forces were injured during the operation.
Investigations are ongoing.
