Deadly Crash Near Williamsfield Exit Leaves One Dead

MANCHESTER, rJamaica — A man is dead following a two-vehicle collision near the Williamsfield exit of Highway 2000 in Manchester on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased has been identified as 57-year-old Wayne Campbell, of Old Porus Road, in the parish.

According to police reports, around 4:50 p.m., Campbell was driving a black Mitsubishi Colt motorcar heading westbound towards Williamsfield, when he attempted to make a U-turn at the end of the median barrier, from the westbound lane to the eastbound side.

During the maneuver, a Toyota Hiace, which was also travelling westbound, collided with his vehicle.

Campbell sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Mandeville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police are once again urging motorists to refrain from making illegal U-turns at that location, and instead use the designated Williamsfield roundabout.

Since the opening of the May Pen to Williamsfield leg of Highway 2000 in September 2023, concerns have been raised about direct access from Porus to the highway. Several political representatives have made promises to address the issue, but motorists from Porus continue to argue that the current Toll Gate exit via Clarendon Park is inconvenient.

The May Pen to Williamsfield stretch spans approximately 23 kilometres of newly constructed four-lane highway, and an additional five kilometres along the upgraded Melrose Hill Bypass. The highway currently remains toll-free
