Twenty Westmoreland residents, including eight long-serving municipal corporation employees, were recognised for their contribution to the parish during its Heroes Day Salute and Awards Ceremony.
The event took place at Norman Square in Savanna-la-Mar on National Heroes Day, Monday, October 19.
Twelve residents received awards for service in education, agriculture, public service, community development, health, culture and religion. The remaining eight honourees were municipal corporation employees recognised for more than 25 years of service each, with some serving up to 32 years.
Mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, Councillor Danree Delancy, praised the recipients, saying their dedication reflected the spirit of Jamaica’s National Heroes.
He said recognising the country’s heroes should also include celebrating people whose everyday service strengthens communities and inspires hope.
“While their contributions differ, the award recipients are united by a common purpose; a genuine desire to serve others and to leave a positive and lasting impact on the lives of those around them,” Delancy said.
He credited the honourees with supporting livelihoods, preserving cultural traditions and improving the wellbeing of residents throughout Westmoreland.
The mayor also highlighted the contribution of the eight municipal employees, who serve across five departments.
“Their loyalty, professionalism, hard work and institutional knowledge have helped to support the corporation’s operations and its continued delivery of services,” he said.
Delancy noted that meaningful service is often demonstrated through sustained commitment, kindness, leadership and a willingness to persevere through difficult work, even when recognition is limited.
“Our awardees have shown us that true greatness is measured not only by what we achieve for ourselves, but also by what we contribute to the lives of others,” he added.
The ceremony was hosted by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission in partnership with the Westmoreland Municipal Corporation.
