St. Catherine, Jamaica — A man who was shot and injured during an alleged gun battle with the police in Caymanas Bay, St. Catherine, has died while undergoing treatment at hospital.
The deceased has been identified as 24-year-old Rushawn Gayle, otherwise called “Russian”, a labourer of Caymanas Bay.
Reports from the police are that around 5:35 a.m. on Tuesday, a team of lawmen carried out a targeted operation in the community. During the operation, Gayle was reportedly accosted by the police.
According to investigators, Gayle allegedly brandished a firearm and opened fire, resulting in a confrontation. The police reportedly returned the fire, hitting Gayle.
He was later transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was admitted under police guard but succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
The police say a Ruger Hi-Point 9mm pistol with a magazine containing six rounds of ammunition was recovered from the scene.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has since launched a probe into the incident.
