NEW YORK, USA — A 49-year-old woman was shot and killed by police after allegedly stabbing two people, killing one, in New York City’s busy Times Square on Monday afternoon.
The suspect, identified by police as Pamela Cisneros of Queens, allegedly carried out the attacks near Seventh Avenue and West 41st Street shortly after 4:20 p.m.
According to New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, Cisneros was armed with two large knives, which she reportedly pulled from a red shopping bag before attacking a 68-year-old man who had just exited a subway station with his wife.
The man was stabbed in the abdomen and taken to Bellevue Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
Police said Cisneros then moved up Seventh Avenue and, within about 20 seconds, allegedly stabbed a 32-year-old woman in the abdomen.
The woman, identified as Erin Piacenti, was rushed to Bellevue Hospital but later died from her injuries. Piacenti, who was from New Jersey, worked as a vice president at Bank of America. (CBS News)
Witnesses alerted police, who located Cisneros near West 42nd and West 43rd streets. Officers reportedly spent about four minutes ordering her to drop the knives, but police said she refused and threatened the officers.
Multiple officers deployed Tasers, but they were unsuccessful. Police said Cisneros then advanced towards officers while still armed, prompting two officers to open fire.
She was struck and taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Police said Cisneros had a documented mental-health history involving incidents in 2018 and 2019, but no prior arrests. Investigators have described the stabbings as random and unprovoked. Authorities also said there is no indication the attack was terrorism-related. (AP News)
The police shooting was captured on officers’ body-worn cameras. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the footage will be released as the investigation continues.
The NYPD is conducting an internal investigation into the fatal police shooting.
