NEW YORK — A 24-year-old Pennsylvania woman raising money for Parkinson’s research died after collapsing roughly two miles from the finish of the New York City Marathon on Sunday.
Rachel Apa, of Lewisberry, was taking part in her first marathon when she suffered a medical emergency near mile 24 in Central Park. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where she died hours later.
Apa had entered the race in honour of her late grandfather, who had Parkinson’s disease. Her fundraising campaign supported the Parkinson’s Foundation.
According to race organiser New York Road Runners, a bystander began CPR before event medical personnel continued resuscitation efforts and used a defibrillator.
Her father, Steve Apa, told NBC News that his daughter had suffered rhabdomyolysis. However, reporting published Wednesday said the city’s medical examiner was still investigating her death.
Apa was a former Bucknell University field hockey player who had recently started a master’s programme at Charleston Southern University.
New York Road Runners expressed sympathy to her family, friends and fellow runners following her death
