The Wolmer’s Boys’ School community has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of a fourth-form student who collapsed while attending class on Monday.
The teenager was rushed to hospital following the medical emergency but was later pronounced dead, according to the Wolmer’s Joint Board of Management.
Details surrounding what caused the student to collapse have not been disclosed.
Principal Dwight Pennycooke said the school dismissed classes early following the incident and contacted the student’s parents. Counselling has also been made available to students, particularly those in the affected year group.
Pennycooke, who was at the hospital where the student had reportedly been taken, said he was continuing to monitor the situation.
In a statement, the Wolmer’s Joint Board of Management expressed profound sadness over the student’s death and extended condolences to his parents, relatives, friends, classmates, teachers and others affected by the loss.
The board described the death as a deeply painful moment for both the student’s family and the wider Wolmer’s community.
Support is being provided to students and members of staff as they cope with the tragedy.
School administrators have also appealed for the privacy of the student’s family to be respected and urged members of the public to refrain from speculating about the circumstances surrounding his death or sharing information that has not been verified.
Meanwhile, National Parent Teachers Association of Jamaica President Stewart Jacobs extended condolences to the student’s family and the Wolmer’s community.
Jacobs described the death of someone so young as particularly painful, adding that the tragedy has affected the wider parent-teacher community.
The circumstances surrounding the student’s death remain unclear.
