A police operation targeting a man linked to a string of property crimes across southern St Elizabeth ended in a fatal shooting in Seaview district near Junction on Sunday morning.
Ian Vassell, otherwise called “Papa”, was killed after police went to his home at about 5:15 am to execute a warrant.
According to the police, Vassell was seen carrying a firearm during the operation and allegedly pointed the weapon at members of the team. Officers responded by firing at him, and he was struck.
He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police reported recovering a .38 revolver along with five .38 cartridges at the scene.
Vassell, a resident of Seaview, had been linked by investigators to a series of break-ins and thefts affecting communities across the southern section of the parish.
Police allege that homes, businesses and livestock were among the targets in Seaview, Southfield, Top Hill, Barbary Hall and Treasure Beach.
At the time of his death, Vassell reportedly had five matters before the courts involving allegations of break-ins, larceny and robbery with aggravation.
In the aftermath of the shooting, authorities raised the threat level against police personnel assigned to the Junction and Pedro Plains areas to high.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting are continuing.
