Westmoreland, Jamaica — A Westmoreland taxi driver has been charged with murder following a deadly altercation that resulted in the chopping death of a man in Savanna-la-Mar.
The accused, 36-year-old Shadwayne Ellis of Geneva district, Grange Hill, is charged with the murder of 54-year-old Rodway Powell, also known as “Jerky,” of Farm Pen Llandillo in the parish.
According to police reports, around 3:00 p.m. on the day of the incident, Ellis and Powell got into an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation. It is alleged that Powell took hold of Ellis’ car keys, prompting Ellis to retrieve a machete from the back of his vehicle. He then reportedly inflicted multiple chop wounds on Powell before fleeing the scene on foot.
Police were called to the location and found Powell lying on the ground with severe wounds to his upper body. He was rushed to the hospital but later succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
Ellis was taken into custody and formally charged on Saturday. His court date is currently being finalized as investigations continue.
