SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland — A well-known entrepreneur from Whitehouse has died in an incident police are treating as a suspected suicide, sending waves of grief throughout the parish on Friday.
Dead is 45-year-old Craig Chong, a businessman recognized for operating several hardware establishments across Westmoreland.
Police reports indicate the incident occurred about 11:15 p.m. Thursday along the Belmont main road. Residents reportedly heard a loud explosion followed by a crashing noise and contacted authorities.
When officers arrived, they discovered a white 2017 Ford Everest off the roadway in nearby bushes.
Chong was found seated in the driver’s seat wearing a black merino, blue jeans and grey sneakers. Investigators observed what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the right side of his head.
Citizens at the scene handed a licensed Walther 9mm pistol to police. The firearm reportedly contained a magazine loaded with 16 cartridges, along with a second magazine carrying 15 additional rounds.
He was transported to the Savanna-la-Mar Public General Hospital, where he later died while receiving treatment.
Law enforcement officials said preliminary checks revealed no indication of a struggle, no missing belongings, and all vehicle doors were locked. Based on those findings, investigators do not suspect foul play at this time.
