St Catherine, Jamaica — A man accused of attempting to sexually assault a woman in the Bermaddy community has died following a mob attack on Saturday morning.
According to police reports, the incident began about 8:00 p.m. on Friday when the man allegedly assaulted a woman and attempted to rape her. The woman reportedly escaped and raised an alarm by shouting for help, prompting residents to respond.
The suspect reportedly fled the area before law enforcement officers arrived. The matter was subsequently reported, and a police team visited the community; however, the individual was not located at that time.
Reports indicate that at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, the man was seen in the community once more. He was allegedly set upon by several persons and attacked with machetes and other objects.
He was later transported to the Linstead Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment. His identity has not yet been released.
The Linstead Criminal Investigation Branch has since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
