Montego Bay, Jamaica — Cheers erupted at Sangster International Airport on Thursday as Vybz Kartel made his triumphant return to Jamaican soil, just hours before his highly anticipated crowning as King of the Dancehall at Reggae Sumfest.
The deejay, who has spent the past year dominating stages worldwide since his release from prison, arrived in Montego Bay to a warm welcome from fans and media alike. The energy was palpable as preparations intensified for Friday night’s grand coronation — a moment nearly 15 years in the making since his last Sumfest appearance in 2011.
For Kartel, the occasion is about more than a title. Speaking to reporters at the airport, the “Teacha” made it clear that his love for performing in front of his fellow Jamaicans remains unmatched.
“I’ve been the king from before I went to prison, and the record is there to show. So that (the crowning) is good and fine. But for me, what really excites me is to perform for Jamaicans. One Jamaica, one dancehall. Never forget,” he said.
Kartel has already cemented his comeback with a string of sold-out shows, beginning with his historic Freedom Street concert at Kingston’s National Stadium — which drew a staggering 30,000 fans — followed by headlining appearances at the Barclays Center in New York, plus performances in Miami and London.
At the 2025 Wireless Festival in London, the deejay stunned the crowd when he joined Drake on stage — marking his first UK performance in 20 years and solidifying his position as a global ambassador for dancehall culture.
Now back on home turf, Kartel is set to make history yet again as he officially takes the crown before a sold-out Reggae Sumfest crowd on Festival Night One. Fans from across Jamaica and around the world have already descended on Montego Bay, eager to witness what promises to be a regal and unforgettable performance
