Voletta Wallace, the Jamaican-born mother of the late rap icon Christopher “The Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace, has died at the age of 78. She passed away on Friday morning at her home in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, due to natural causes, as confirmed by Monroe County Coroner Thomas Yanac.
Born in Trelawny Parish, Jamaica, Voletta Wallace immigrated to Brooklyn, New York, where she worked as a schoolteacher and single-handedly raised her son, Christopher. Following his tragic murder in 1997, a case that remains unsolved, she became the steward of his legacy. She managed his estate, which has grown to an estimated value of $160 million, and served as an executive producer for the 2009 biographical film “Notorious.”
In 2020, Voletta proudly represented her son during his posthumous induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She expressed immense pride in his accomplishments, stating, “As a mother, I’m extremely proud of his achievements.”
Voletta Wallace is survived by her mother, her grandchildren CJ and T’yanna, and other relatives.
