Vendor Caught Urinating Near Market Faces Legal Action in St James

MONTEGO BAY, St James – A female vendor in St James is facing prosecution after being caught in a compromising position near the Charles Gordon Market. The woman was recorded urinating into a plastic container while positioned in the back of a van on Fustic Road, a short distance from the bustling market. The incident, which has drawn public attention and concern, has prompted swift action from local health authorities.

Medical Officer of Health for St James, Dr. Francine Phillips-Kelly, confirmed that the vendor will face prosecution for violating the Food Handling Regulations of 1998. During a briefing at the St James Municipal Corporation’s chambers on Tuesday, Dr. Phillips-Kelly emphasized that the vendor’s actions were a serious breach of health and safety standards, and as a result, she will no longer be permitted to continue her business.

The vendor, who has not been publicly named due to pending charges, was known to sell a variety of ground provisions, along with oranges and pears, on the roadside near the market. Although she claimed that she did not peel any of the items she sold, the breach of hygiene regulations was considered severe enough to warrant immediate action.

The woman met with representatives from the St James health services on Monday morning, where the details of her breaches and potential penalties were discussed. According to a source familiar with the meeting, the vendor was apologetic and explained that she had been dealing with health issues, including a recent knee operation. Despite her explanation, she was advised on proper alternatives, including the use of public restrooms, which are available nearby.

Montego Bay Mayor, Councillor Richard Vernon, provided further context, noting that the woman had previously operated from a stall inside the market, located conveniently close to the bathroom facilities. However, she did not renew her vending license in 2021 and had since moved to selling her goods on the roadside.

Vernon stressed that the market is equipped with adequate amenities to accommodate vendors and customers, and the situation could have been avoided if the vendor had used the available facilities.

As the investigation concludes, the vendor is expected to be prosecuted within the coming days, highlighting the importance of maintaining strict hygiene standards in public food handling.
