UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Fatally Shot in Targeted Midtown Manhattan Attack

NEW YORK, NY — Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed in a targeted attack Wednesday morning outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel. Thompson, 45, was in the city to attend his company’s annual investor conference.

The incident occurred around 6:40 a.m. near the Hilton Hotel at West 54th Street and Sixth Avenue. Police sources say the masked gunman, who remains at large, appeared to be lying in wait for Thompson and shot him several times at point-blank range as he approached the hotel.

Authorities believe the murder was targeted, though the motive remains unclear. New York City Mayor Eric Adams described it as “not a random act of violence.”

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson shot and killed Wednesday morning outside a Midtown Manhattan hotel.

The gunman reportedly knew Thompson’s planned entry point and fled the scene northward through a nearby alley on a bicycle. Police have described the suspect as a slim man, approximately 6-foot-1, dressed entirely in black and wearing a ski mask

Thompson is survived by his wife and two children. Speaking to media, Elena Reveiz, his sister-in-law, expressed deep sadness. “We are just so sad right now,” she said, adding that Thompson was a devoted father.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz also mourned the loss, tweeting, “This is horrifying news and a terrible loss for the business and health care community in Minnesota. Minnesota is sending our prayers to Brian’s family and the UnitedHealthcare team.”

Police are reviewing surveillance footage in hopes of identifying the suspect. No motive has yet been established, though Thompson’s prominent role as the head of UnitedHealthcare, the largest health insurer globally, has raised concerns about possible professional or personal connections to the attack.

The investor conference, scheduled to begin at 8 a.m., proceeded as planned despite the tragedy. UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare’s parent company, has yet to release a formal statement on Thompson’s death.
