Florida Woman Sentenced to Life for Murder of Boyfriend Left to Suffocate in Suitcase

WINTER PARK, FL — Sarah Boone, 47, has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of second-degree murder in the 2020 death of her boyfriend, Jorge Torres Jr. Boone zipped Torres, 42, into a suitcase and left him to suffocate while recording videos mocking his pleas for help.

The chilling crime took place on February 24, 2020, at Boone’s home in Winter Park, Florida. Boone claimed she and Torres had been drinking wine and decided to play hide-and-seek, during which she zipped the 5-foot-2 Torres into a suitcase. Boone initially told investigators she left enough space for Torres to free himself and went to bed, only to find him dead the following morning.

However, videos later retrieved from Boone’s phone contradicted her account. In the recordings, Torres was heard pleading, “Sarah, I can’t breathe,” to which Boone responded with mocking accusations of infidelity and references to past domestic disputes. “That’s on you,” Boone is heard saying in one clip.

The trial, delayed by Boone’s frequent changes in legal representation, culminated in damning evidence presented by the prosecution. Prosecutors argued that Boone’s actions were deliberate and vengeful, pointing to her recorded taunts and lack of action to release Torres despite his pleas.

Boone claimed in her defense that she suffered from “battered spouse syndrome” and alleged a history of abuse by Torres. She testified that she feared for her life if she unzipped the suitcase.

Prosecutors, however, contended that Boone’s behavior was motivated by resentment over Torres’ alleged infidelity and that her inaction was intentional.

Torres’ death has left a lasting emotional toll on his family. His mother, Blanca Torres, described the profound loss of her son: “She not only killed my son, she killed a father, a brother, an uncle.”

His daughter, Ana Victoria Torres, shared her struggles with depression and anxiety since her father’s death, recounting waking up from nightmares only to realize the reality of her loss. Torres’ sister, Victoria Torres, condemned Boone, stating, “She has caused a lifetime of pain and deserves to rot in jail.”

Boone’s attorney expressed disappointment with the verdict, and Boone unsuccessfully sought a new trial, alleging misconduct and errors during the proceedings.

Her life sentence underscores the severity of the crime, which authorities have described as a calculated and callous act. Boone will serve her sentence without the possibility of parole, closing a grim chapter in a case that shocked the nation.
