MONTEGO BAY, St James — A 42-year-old man with a Florida address was arrested last Friday at Sangster International Airport after authorities allegedly discovered a cache of firearms and ammunition in his luggage.
The man, reportedly traveling on a Jamaican passport, is alleged to have been carrying two dozen firearms, some dismantled, along with 200 rounds of ammunition. His identity has not been disclosed as he has not yet been formally charged.
According to a police report, the discovery was made around 3 p.m. during routine baggage inspections in the Customs Hall after the man disembarked a Southwest Airlines flight from Florida.
A firearm wrapped in foil was reportedly uncovered during the initial search. This prompted the involvement of the Firearms and Narcotics Investigation Division, whose detailed inspection of the passenger’s luggage revealed additional weapons and ammunition.
The contents of the luggage included:
- A black suitcase labeled “Juicy Couture,” which contained socks filled with .357 Magnum rounds, black jeans concealing a Glock magazine, and other firearm components such as a DVR with gun parts and metal objects resembling converter chips.
- A second suitcase marked “Highland Tactical,” containing dismantled firearms, pistol barrels, firearm slides, ammunition trays, and multiple magazines.
Additionally, two black Visa debit cards and three mobile phones were found in the suspect’s possession.
A former police officer described the seizure as highly sophisticated, suggesting the firearms were configured for individuals with advanced knowledge of weaponry.
“This is not your regular gun bust,” said the ex-cop. “The level of sophistication suggests these weapons were destined for skilled handlers, possibly in the criminal underworld. It’s alarming, and authorities must act quickly to uncover the network behind this operation.”
While police have confirmed the arrest, they have refrained from providing further details pending the outcome of the investigation.
This significant seizure has heightened concerns about organized gun smuggling operations and their potential link to criminal activities in Jamaica.
Investigations are ongoing.
