U.S. President Donald Trump has announced an indefinite pause on planned military strikes against Iran, even as instability continues in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement shared on social media, Trump indicated that Washington agreed to delay further action following mediation efforts led by Pakistan. The pause is intended to allow time for ongoing discussions to reach a formal agreement, though no new timeline has been provided.
The earlier two-week ceasefire, which was set to expire Wednesday evening in Washington, has effectively been extended without a defined endpoint. Despite this development, the U.S. has maintained its naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime trade.
Iran has strongly opposed the blockade, describing it as an act of war. Authorities in Tehran have made it clear that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz will remain in place as long as U.S. restrictions on its shipping continue.
As of early Wednesday, senior Iranian officials had not publicly responded to Trump’s announcement.
Meanwhile, tensions in the region remain high. Reports indicate that three cargo vessels were attacked in the strait following the ceasefire extension, with two of the ships allegedly seized by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The situation continues to evolve, raising concerns over global shipping routes and regional stability.
