Police say two men were shot and killed during an alleged confrontation with officers along the Williamsfield Highway in Manchester on Thursday night.
According to Acting Commander for the parish, Deputy Superintendent Luhas Daniels, the incident unfolded about 8:45 pm when officers signaled a motorist to stop at the Williamsfield roundabout. The driver reportedly complied at first but then accelerated, prompting a high-speed pursuit.
Investigators report that occupants of the fleeing vehicle opened fire while attempting to evade the police. The chase continued to the Melrose Hill bypass section of the highway, where the vehicle reportedly came to a stop and additional shots were fired at the pursuing officers. A gunfight followed.
When the exchange ended, two men were found with gunshot wounds. They were transported to the Mandeville Regional Hospital, where both were pronounced dead on arrival.
Police also reported the seizure of a 1.22 pistol loaded with nine rounds of ammunition.
Deputy Superintendent Daniels warned that law enforcement will respond firmly to criminal activity within the parish.
“Manchester is not the place to traverse. If you disobey our orders and confront us, we are well trained and we will defend ourselves,” he stated.
