Trump Secures Major Victory as Congress Passes Sweeping Tax and Spending Bill

United States President Donald Trump scored a major political win on Thursday after Congress narrowly passed his flagship tax and spending bill, solidifying his radical second-term agenda and boosting funding for his anti-immigration drive.

The White House confirmed that Trump will sign the bill today — on US Independence Day.

The bill underscores the president’s firm grip on the Republican Party, despite concerns over ballooning national debt and deep cuts to health and welfare programs.

A small group of GOP opponents eventually fell in line after Speaker Mike Johnson worked through the night to unite dissenters behind the controversial “One Big Beautiful Bill.”

The bill passed the House of Representatives 218-214 after clearing the Senate earlier in the week.

“One of the most consequential Bills ever. The USA is the ‘HOTTEST’ Country in the World, by far!!!” Trump posted on social media after the vote.

Democratic minority leader Hakeem Jeffries tried to delay proceedings with a nearly nine-hour speech, calling the legislation “one big, ugly bill” that hurts everyday Americans while rewarding the wealthy.

The 869-page package fulfills many of Trump’s campaign promises, including:

  • Boosting military spending

  • Funding a mass migrant deportation drive

  • Extending his first-term tax cuts by US$4.5 trillion

  • Slashing Medicaid and food assistance programs

Critics warn the bill could add US$3.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next decade, strip millions of Americans of health insurance, and lead to the closure of rural hospitals.

Johnson defended the bill as “a key cornerstone of America’s new Golden Age.”

Democrats hope public backlash against the deep cuts and wealth redistribution will help them reclaim the House in the 2026 midterm elections.

The legislative win caps off a string of recent successes for Trump, including a Supreme Court ruling that limited judicial blocks on his policies and US airstrikes that helped broker a ceasefire between Israel and Iran.

The president is expected to sign the bill into law at a special ceremony later today.
