Tourist Helicopter Crash in Hudson River Claims Six Lives, Including Three Children

New York City — A devastating helicopter crash in the Hudson River near Lower Manhattan on Thursday afternoon has claimed the lives of six people, including three children, all of whom were tourists visiting from Spain.

The New York Helicopters chartered flight had departed from the Wall Street Heliport shortly before 3:00 p.m. and was en route northward when disaster struck. Authorities say the Bell 206 helicopter turned south after reaching the George Washington Bridge and then plunged into the Hudson River at approximately 3:17 p.m., off the coast of River Drive in Hoboken, New Jersey.

The aircraft was carrying a pilot, two adults, and three children, all part of a Spanish family on a sightseeing tour. Tragically, none of the passengers survived. The pilot’s condition has not yet been disclosed.

“This is a heartbreaking day for the families and for our city,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams during a press briefing. “Our hearts go out to everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy.”

Footage of the incident showed the helicopter falling out of the sky without a tail rotor or main rotor blade, crashing inverted into the 50-degree waters. Witnesses described a terrifying scene.

“I heard what sounded like gunshots, then saw pieces falling before the helicopter just dropped,” said Dani Horbiak, who witnessed the crash from her apartment window. Another eyewitness, Eric Campoverde, added, “It came down at a 45-degree angle. Big splash — it was very scary.”

Emergency personnel from across the region rushed to the scene. Despite the quick response and efforts by the Jersey City Medical Center, all six passengers were pronounced dead.

According to Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, the helicopter was on its sixth flight of the day. The Jersey City Police Department has taken the lead in the investigation, as the crash occurred on the New Jersey side of the river.

Mayor Fulop expressed concern about air traffic over the Hudson River, stating, “This incident highlights long-standing safety concerns we’ve had about helicopter activity in this corridor.”

The Spanish Consulate in New York has confirmed they are in close contact with local authorities and the Spanish Foreign Ministry is coordinating with officials to identify the victims and provide support to the affected family.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed the aircraft involved was a Bell 206 and is assisting with the ongoing investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also expected to join the probe into the cause of the crash.

This tragic event has cast a shadow over one of the world’s busiest urban skies, prompting renewed debate over air traffic regulations and sightseeing flights over New York City.
