Social media powerhouse TikTok is reportedly preparing to halt all operations in the United States this Sunday if a government-mandated ban takes effect as scheduled. The decision follows months of scrutiny over the app’s ties to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, and a looming legislative deadline set for January 19.
According to sources cited by The Information, the platform, which boasts over 170 million American users, will initiate a complete blackout, suspending all access rather than allowing limited functionality for existing users. This move deviates from earlier expectations that the app would remain accessible even after being removed from app stores.
The shutdown decision aligns with a federal mandate requiring TikTok to either divest its operations from ByteDance or cease its U.S. presence entirely. While the law primarily restricts new downloads and cloud storage for U.S. user data, TikTok has reportedly opted for a more drastic response by shutting down the app altogether.
Users attempting to open TikTok after the deadline will be greeted with a notification explaining the ban, alongside instructions on how to download their personal data. The company’s reported approach reflects a strong stance amid ongoing legal battles challenging the ban on First Amendment grounds, arguing that it violates free speech protections.
TikTok’s future hangs in the balance after skeptical questioning from Supreme Court justices last week suggested the ban would be upheld. Complicating matters further, the shutdown coincides with the U.S. presidential transition, with Donald Trump, an opponent of the ban, set to assume office on Monday.
While ByteDance has so far resisted selling TikTok’s U.S. operations, analysts speculate that the company may reconsider as a market exit becomes increasingly likely.
In an internal email obtained by The Verge, TikTok reassured U.S. employees that their jobs, pay, and benefits would remain secure even if the platform goes dark. The message emphasized that offices will stay open, and the company is “planning for various scenarios.”
This anticipated shutdown marks a pivotal moment for TikTok as it navigates regulatory challenges and seeks a resolution that could define its presence in one of its largest markets.
