Walkerswood, St. Ann – A devastating fire early Sunday morning claimed the lives of three young siblings in Walkerswood, St. Ann, leaving the community in mourning.
The victims were identified as sisters Tashawna Mattis, 7, and Tashawnie Mattis, 4, and their brother Tavarno Mattis, 2. Their bodies were discovered on a bed after the fire engulfed their home in Cottage District.
The children were left in the care of their grandmother, Robin Roach, while their mother, 24-year-old Tanique Wilson, visited her boyfriend. Around 2:00 a.m., Roach noticed fire coming from the room where the children were sleeping. She managed to escape with her five-year-old grandson, who was sleeping in another room.
The fire quickly spread, engulfing the house. Tragically, the three siblings perished in the blaze.
The children’s father, Odain Mattis, expressed his deep sorrow, revealing that he had urged their mother to leave the children with him while she was out. He said he was at home when he received the devastating news and was powerless to help.
Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing the importance of child safety and condemning the negligence that led to this tragic outcome. He stressed the need for greater vigilance and responsible parenting to prevent such tragedies.
The Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) and the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information issued a joint statement urging parents and guardians to prioritize child safety and implement fire-safety measures in their homes.
The CPFSA is providing support to the grieving family, including trauma counseling and assistance with essential needs. The Ministry of Education will offer counseling and support to the children’s classmates and teachers at their school.
