Spanish Town, St. Catherine – A 21-year-old man accused of defrauding an overseas investor of $4 million was granted bail in the St. Catherine Parish Court on Friday.
Malick Porter of Thompson Pen, Spanish Town, faces a charge of fraudulent conversion. He was ordered to pay $250,000 bail with surety and adhere to strict bail conditions, including reporting to the Spanish Town police weekly, surrendering his travel documents, and submitting his fingerprints.
Porter is scheduled to return to court on February 25th.
The allegations stem from an agreement made in February 2024, where Porter, introduced to the complainant by a relative, was entrusted with $4 million for the purchase of two vehicles intended for use as taxis.
Despite promises and assurances, Porter failed to deliver on the agreed-upon transaction, providing a series of excuses and failing to account for the funds.
The complainant subsequently reported the matter to the Spanish Town police. Following an investigation, Porter was arrested and subsequently charged.
