Three Dead in Suspected Hantavirus Outbreak Aboard Atlantic Cruise Ship

Authorities are investigating a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard an expedition cruise ship after three passengers died and several others fell ill during the voyage.

The ship, traveling across the Atlantic toward Cape Verde, reported multiple cases of severe flu-like illness among passengers. Medical concerns escalated quickly after three individuals died under similar conditions. Officials have identified hantavirus as the likely cause, though investigations are still ongoing.

The vessel was temporarily denied docking at Cape Verde. Passengers were confined to their cabins while medical teams conducted onboard assessments and isolation procedures. Some critically ill passengers were evacuated for treatment.

Hantavirus is a rare but serious disease typically spread through contact with rodent droppings, urine, or saliva. It is not easily transmitted between people. Symptoms can include fever, muscle pain, fatigue, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing.

Global health officials say the outbreak appears to be limited to the ship and that the risk to the wider public is low. There is currently no indication of widespread transmission.

Investigators are working to determine how passengers were exposed and whether environmental factors contributed to the outbreak. The cruise operator has stated it is cooperating with authorities as the situation continues to be monitored.

Further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
