Tennis icon Serena Williams has opened up about a recent health scare, sharing that she underwent surgery to remove a grapefruit-sized cyst from her neck. In a candid TikTok video posted on Tuesday, the 43-year-old athlete revealed that she first noticed a lump on her neck in May and, after medical tests, learned that the cyst was benign.
Despite the reassuring diagnosis, Williams said the cyst continued to grow. When it reached the size of a grapefruit, doctors advised her to have it removed to prevent potential complications, such as leaking or infection.
In the video, Williams documented her experience in the hospital following the surgery, expressing gratitude for the successful outcome. “I am feeling so grateful and fortunate everything worked out, and most of all, I’m healthy,” she shared in the post.
While recovering, Williams also made time for family, as the video shows her taking her eldest daughter, Olympia, to an American Girl doll store while wearing a bandage from the surgery. Despite the physical discomfort, Williams humorously remarked, “Mommy is suffering, but mom has to keep showing up.”
Williams and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, are parents to two daughters, Olympia, 6, and Adira, who is just over a year old. The 23-time Grand Slam champion, who stepped away from professional tennis in 2022, has been busy with various projects and events, including hosting the 2024 ESPY Awards in July, just two months after first noticing the lump.
