Residents of Brown’s Town, St Ann, are the latest to benefit from improved internet access through the Universal Service Fund’s (USF) Connect Ja Public Wi-Fi programme. Launched on October 11, the free service aims to enhance connectivity in the area, building on previous initiatives by the USF, including Community Wi-Fi sites in nearby locations such as Thicketts, Mount Zion, and Bamboo.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to bridge Jamaica’s digital divide, ensuring that internet access is available to communities for educational, business, and communication purposes. The upgraded Wi-Fi service is expected to empower residents by providing greater access to information and opportunities, facilitating community engagement and economic development.
Connect Ja, a key programme under the USF, focuses on providing free internet access in public spaces such as parks and town centres. To date, approximately 20 Connect Ja sites have been established across the island, as part of the USF’s strategy to drive national digital participation and foster innovation and growth.
The initiative has received positive feedback from local representatives, including Member of Parliament for St Ann North Western, Krystal Lee, who highlighted the benefits of improved connectivity for education and economic opportunities in the community.
