Teen Drowns at Bikini Beach in Portland

PORTLAND, Jamaica – A Sunday outing ended in tragedy when a Titchfield High School student drowned at Bikini Beach in Port Antonio.

The deceased has been identified as Vijay Popley, 17, of New Road in Port Antonio. He was an upper sixth form student at the school.

Reports are that about 11:15 a.m., Popley was among a group of eight students from the institution who went to the popular beach for a swim. During the activity, he went missing.

One of the students alerted the Port Antonio Marine Police, and the Port Antonio Fire Station was also informed. Firefighters, assisted by local fishermen, joined in a search for the teen.

At approximately 1:35 p.m., Popley was discovered unresponsive. He was taken to the Port Antonio Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The body was later removed to a funeral home pending a post-mortem examination.

Investigations into the incident are continuing
