WESTMORELAND — Police have charged taxi driver Collin James with the murder of Natalie Gooden, the Westmoreland woman who died after being brutally attacked at a house in Cornwall Mountain in the parish.
Reports are that Gooden was found locked inside the house, badly beaten and burned. She was taken to hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, has welcomed the development in the case, commending the police as well as residents who came forward with information.
“We all hoped that she would’ve pulled through, but it’s now very important that members of the community give information to the police to ensure that there is justice for Miss Gooden,” Grange said.
The minister also urged the public to remain vigilant and play their part in ending violence against women, noting that the Government has measures in place to punish offenders and support victims.
“We now have shelters, we now have hotlines, we now have Domestic Violence Intervention Centres at police stations islandwide,” Grange stated. “So I say to any woman suffering, you can leave an abusive relationship and we will help you.”
Persons in need of assistance are encouraged to contact the National 24-hour Domestic Violence Hotline at 876-553-0372.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
