Sunshine Girls Sweep South Africa in Margaret Beckford Sunshine Series

Kingston, Jamaica — The National Indoor Sports Centre erupted in celebration last night as the Sunshine Girls capped off a dominant performance in the Margaret Beckford Sunshine Series, securing a 58-47 victory over South Africa to complete a 3-0 series whitewash.

With the series already clinched after two commanding wins, the Jamaicans were determined to end on a high note in the final match. The home crowd, armed with pot covers and endless enthusiasm, fueled the team’s energy as they delivered yet another stellar performance.

Sunshine Girls head coach Sasher-Gaye Henry expressed her pride in the team, emphasizing that this victory marks another milestone in the program’s long-term vision.

“We are excited for the win and very grateful for the opportunity,” Henry said. “This is a journey we have started. It’s a long road ahead, but we are committed to developing these ladies and bringing in new talent.”

Jamaica stormed out of the gate, surging to a 10-goal lead in just the first six minutes. South Africa managed to regroup with the introduction of Elmere van de Berg and Kamogelo Maseko, closing the first quarter at 14-9.

The second quarter belonged to Shimona Nelson Jok, who showcased her dominance by scoring 37 goals from 40 attempts across the match. Her remarkable accuracy throughout the series, missing only six attempts across all three games, was a key factor in the Sunshine Girls’ success. By halftime, Jamaica had extended their lead to 29-19.

Despite South Africa’s efforts, the Jamaicans maintained control in the third quarter, bolstered by Shanice Beckford’s 14 goals from 19 attempts and contributions from Rhea Dixon and Simone Gordon. By the end of the third quarter, Jamaica led 45-32, ultimately closing the game 58-47.

South Africa’s head coach, Jenny van Dyk, congratulated Jamaica on their performance but noted her team’s resilience.

“They might have won the war, but we definitely won some battles today,” van Dyk said. “After a rough start, we pulled it back, and I’m proud of our team. We’re improving, and the rest of the world needs to take notice.”

South Africa’s top scorers included van de Berg, who netted 30 goals from 33 attempts, and Maseko, who added 16 from 17.

The series win is Jamaica’s second consecutive international victory, following their 2-1 win over England in the Vitality Netball Horizon Series two months ago. With their sights set on further growth and success, the Sunshine Girls continue to shine brightly on the global netball stage.
