Alleged cult leader and head of the Montego Bay, St James-based Qahal Yahweh religious group, Omar Thompson, was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 on Tuesday when his case was heard in the chambers of the Court of Appeal.
Thompson, who is represented by King’s Counsel Peter Champagnie and Attorney-at-law Samoi Campbell, was sentenced on June 29 to serve 22 months in prison on charges of cruelty to children. He and his legal team appealed the sentencing, and bail was granted pending the outcome of his appeal.
The judge also ordered a surety and stipulated that Thompson must report under the conditions of his bail and have no contact with the witnesses.
According to reports, Thompson was taken into custody following a police operation at his premises. Following his appearance in family court, he was found guilty of abusing two children, aged 14 and 12, during late 2020.
