A St Elizabeth man drowned on Monday after being pulled under by a riptide at Frenchman Beach in Treasure Beach, despite warnings from locals about hazardous swimming conditions.
The victim, identified as Dale Shaw, a taxi operator from Southfield, was at the beach with a female tourist when the incident occurred in the afternoon.
Both individuals were dragged underwater, but residents managed to rescue the woman. Shaw, however, suffered a head wound and could not be revived despite CPR attempts. He was later pronounced dead at hospital.
Police are reminding the public to exercise caution near water and have launched an investigation into the incident.
