A 49-year-old St Catherine woman who pleaded guilty to cruelty to a child was sentenced to a two-year suspended sentence in the parish court on Wednesday.
Presiding judge Yvette Wenthworth-Miller also ordered six months of parental supervision as part of the sentence. The woman had been charged for assaulting her 14-year-old stepdaughter and locking her out of their home in February 2024.
Attorney-at-law Rodain Richardson made a heartfelt plea for leniency, arguing that his client acted out of anger but was deeply remorseful for her actions. He also emphasized that she had not wasted the court’s time, having pleaded guilty to the charge early on.
Taking these factors into account, the judge opted for a non-custodial sentence, sparing the woman jail time.
The incident had been reported to the Spanish Town police, leading to her arrest and subsequent charge.
