St. Catherine Man Killed in Alleged Police Confrontation

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine – Ricardo Alexander Powell, also known as “Kogie,” of Belmore Lane, Spanish Town, was fatally shot during an alleged confrontation with police in Spanish Town on Thursday.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:30 a.m. Police personnel, acting on a search warrant, entered a house on Belmore Lane and reportedly encountered Powell, who was allegedly armed with a handgun. Police say Powell opened fire on them, prompting them to return fire. Powell was shot and injured in the exchange.

A Taurus .380 pistol, loaded with four rounds of cartridges and one spent casing, was reportedly recovered at the scene. Powell was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the 1 shooting.
