Dancehall artiste Jamal, whose real name is Tyvel Dixon, was taken into police custody on Friday for questioning in relation to gang activities. The arrest was carried out by officers from Specialised Operations after he performed at Mecca nightclub on Constant Spring Road, St. Andrew.
Alongside Jamal, eleven other men from Corporate Area and St. James addresses were also detained. Authorities suspect their involvement in organized criminal activities.
Jamal, also known as ‘1Dunceman,’ is a prominent figure in the dancehall scene and has been credited with popularizing the use of the term ‘dunce’ in popular music. However, according to police reports, Dixon is alleged to be the leader of the Dunce gang in Barrett Town, St. James, and is a person of interest in three murder cases. At this time, he is not considered a suspect.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Branch and Specialised Operations are set to question Dixon regarding his alleged connections to the gang. During his arrest, police confiscated two phones found in his possession, which are now being examined as part of the investigation.
Authorities have stated that at least four of the men detained alongside Dixon are suspected to be members of the Dunce gang. Dixon is expected to remain in police custody while the investigation continues.
