St Catherine Businessman Fined $1 Million For Possessing Lobster Out Of Season

A St Catherine businessman has been fined a total of $1 million for having spiny lobster in his possession outside the designated fishing season.

Andrew Bennett was fined in the St Catherine Parish Court on Friday after pleading guilty to charges of possession of prohibited fish and failure to declare the spiny lobsters.

Senior Parish Court Judge Janelle Nelson-Gayle ordered Bennett to pay $500,000 for each offence.

The maximum fine for each offence is $3 million.

Bennett was arrested by the police in June after they reportedly observed several pounds of spiny lobster during a visit to his food establishment on Port Henderson Road in Portmore, St Catherine.

The lobster season runs from September 1 to April 30.

Bennett pleaded guilty to the charges when he made his first court appearance in July.

He was represented by attorney-at-law Linden Wellesley.
