KINGSTON, Jamaica — Labour and Social Security Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. says work is under way to strengthen the South East Clarendon skills bank, which helps match residents with employers looking for workers with specific qualifications and experience.
Charles Jr., who represents the constituency, told the House of Representatives during the State of the Constituency Debate on November 3 that the initiative has already connected jobseekers with employers. He said the ministry is exploring how to expand the approach nationwide.
The skills bank is designed to identify residents’ qualifications, work experience and technical abilities so they can be matched with job openings. Charles Jr. said HEART/NSTA Trust and private-sector partners can help residents gain new skills, while those who already have skills can get support with certification and job placement.
A careers and social services fair held in September at the Wembley Centre of Excellence brought together prospective employers, HEART/NSTA Trust and other organisations offering recruitment, training and professional development. Charles Jr. said the constituency also helps place between 80 and 100 young people in summer internships each year, giving them work experience they can include on their résumés.
The MP said more than $12 million has been invested in educational assistance for constituents this year through the Constituency Development Fund and private partners. The support included school bags, uniforms, vouchers and other supplies, as well as grants awarded to 200 secondary and tertiary students in October.
Charles Jr. said the education and training initiatives are intended to help young people stay in school, complete their studies and find work. He also encouraged further commercial and residential investment in the constituency.
