KINGSTON, Jamaica — A shipment of anti-retroviral (ARV) medication used in the treatment of HIV/AIDS is expected to arrive in Jamaica today as health officials move to address concerns over shortages affecting patients across the island.
Reports of limited supplies of some HIV treatment drugs have surfaced in recent weeks, prompting concern among patients and healthcare advocates. The shortage reportedly impacted access to medication at several public health facilities.
Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton previously acknowledged that disruptions in the supply chain had affected the availability of certain ARV drugs used by persons living with HIV.
The incoming shipment is expected to help restore supplies and ease pressure on the public health system while authorities continue efforts to stabilize inventory levels.
Jamaica’s HIV treatment programme remains supported through partnerships involving the Ministry of Health and Wellness and international agencies focused on HIV prevention and care.
Officials have not yet disclosed the quantity of medication included in the shipment or when full distribution across the island will be completed.
