KINGSTON, Jamaica — Operations at the Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) office on King Street in downtown Kingston were briefly suspended Thursday morning after workers detected a strong odour inside the building.
Employees reportedly became aware of the smell upon arriving for work, prompting management to take precautionary measures and clear the premises while investigations were carried out.
Director of Communications at TAJ, Merris Haughton, said preliminary information suggested the scent may have been linked to a dead animal somewhere in the vicinity, although the exact source had not been confirmed.
When checks were made at the location around mid-morning, several staff members were seen gathered outside the building as officials from the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), which manages the property, conducted an inspection.
One employee, who declined to be named, explained that the odour caused discomfort among workers and was most noticeable on the ground floor where customer transactions are usually handled.
Management later decided to temporarily close the office while assessments were completed to determine whether there were any potential health concerns.
The building resumed operations shortly before midday after the situation was addressed.
