Dancehall star Shenseea has earned her first silver certification in the UK for her 2018 hit, Shenyeng Anthem. On September 20, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) awarded her the Brit Certified Silver Award after the track surpassed 200,000 units sold in the UK, as reported by The Official Charts Company.
Produced by Chimney Records on the Rice Grain riddim, Shenyeng Anthem showcasesShenseea’s confidence and bold attitude, emphasizing her stand against drama and disrespect. Other tracks on the riddim include Alkaline’s Pick Unuh Side, Jahmiel’s Level Up, Teejay’s Home, Govana’s Hot Topic, and Ding Dong and Konshens’ Dream Weekend.
In a 2021 interview with Taste Radio, Shenseea reflected on her confidence when recording the song, saying, “I love producing music, I won’t put it out if I’m not comfortable with it, but most of my hits, I see them coming. Shenyeng Anthem—I knew that was gonnahit.” The track has become a defining song for Shenseea, embodying her ‘Shenyeng’ persona, a name coined by fellow artist Ding Dong, which also describes her fanbase.
Shenseea has embraced this identity, even declaring May 20 as ‘Shenyeng Day’ to celebrate the song and her fanbase. The name has since evolved into an alter ego, with Shenseea explaining to KISS Fresh that when she’s deejaying or rapping, she channels ‘ShenYeng,’ but her softer songs represent‘Shenseea.’
Shenyeng Anthem has achieved over 60 million streams on Spotify, though the music video, with 13 million views on YouTube, faced some controversy for accusations of cultural appropriation upon its release.
