ST JAMES, Jamaica: Rushawn Patterson, the man charged in connection with the October 2022 murder of social media influencer Aneika ‘Slickianna’ Townsend, had his bail extended following his appearance in the St James Circuit Court on Monday.
Patterson, who had been granted bail during a previous court appearance on July 16, 2024, saw his case delayed due to the absence of crucial evidence. The court is still awaiting the postmortem report and DNA results related to Townsend’s death, which are essential for the progression of the trial.
Supreme Court Judge, Justice Bertram Morrison, presiding over the case, set a new mention date for October 18 to allow for the completion of these files. Once the outstanding reports are submitted, a trial date will be determined.
Townsend’s body was discovered on October 21, 2022, floating near the shore in Reading, St James, sparking widespread shock across Jamaica. On November 11, 2022, police revealed that Townsend had traveled from Kingston to Montego Bay, where she met Patterson. It is alleged that during the night of October 20, an argument broke out between the two, leading to her being strangled and her body disposed of in the sea.
Patterson was named as a person of interest shortly after the discovery of the body, but missed multiple deadlines to surrender to authorities. He was eventually apprehended by police on November 2, 2022, at a guest house in Hanover.
The upcoming court proceedings are expected to provide further clarity and justice in the high-profile case, which has captured national attention.
