Kingston, Jamaica — It’s official! After years of waiting, the Rockfort Mineral Bath has finally reopened its gates — and starting this Friday, Jamaicans and visitors can once again enjoy one of the island’s most treasured therapeutic gems.
The long-awaited reopening ceremony took place on Thursday, drawing community members, government officials, and cultural advocates to the foot of Long Mountain, where the mineral-rich waters have run for more than a century.
“We have delivered!” declared an enthusiastic Minister of Culture, Olivia “Babsy” Grange, as she addressed the crowd.
“This was a priority for us — to restore Rockfort and return it to the people of Jamaica.”
A National Treasure, Reborn
The facility, which had been shuttered for years, now boasts upgraded pools, renovated facilities, and a refreshed commitment to heritage preservation. Rockfort Mineral Bath was declared a national monument in 1992 and is revered islandwide for its healing waters, said to help with arthritis, poor circulation, and stress.
“I can hear again the pitter-patter of little feet,” said Grange, reflecting emotionally on the return of family outings and community gatherings.
“I see families coming again, as they did so many years ago.”
Public-Private Power Move
The comeback of Rockfort was made possible through a 25-year lease agreement signed in 2024 between the Jamaica National Heritage Trust and Caribbean Cement Company Limited (Carib Cement). Under the deal, Carib Cement is tasked with managing, operating, and upgrading the facility.
So far, Carib Cement has invested $16 million into upgrades, with plans to spend a total of $57 million over five years.
“We invested almost triple our original estimate,” said Carib Cement boss Jorge Martinez,
“Hurricane Beryl, Storm Rafael, and a wicked rainy season set us back — but we pushed through.”
New Rates, Same Healing Vibes
Entry fees have been set as follows:
- $700 for adults
- $500 for children aged 4–12
- $500 for seniors aged 55 and over
With the upgrades and modest pricing, Grange says Rockfort will now become a “cornerstone of Kingston’s culture, entertainment, and wellness tourism circuit.”
A Return to Roots
Once a beloved spot for families, seniors, and seekers of natural healing, Rockfort Mineral Bath is expected to draw crowds once again.
