A police constable assigned to the St Ann Division has been taken into custody amid a corruption investigation linked to allegations of extortion involving a motorist.
The arrest follows reports that the officer allegedly solicited and collected $230,000 from a complainant in connection with the release of a vehicle impounded after a motor vehicle crash in the parish last Friday.
According to reports, the constable initially requested $250,000, but the sum was later reduced to $230,000. The motorist was reportedly told the payment was necessary to secure the vehicle’s release from the pound.
The allegations were reported to the Inspectorate of Professional Standards Oversight Bureau, which launched an investigation into the matter.
As part of the probe, investigators reportedly organized a sting operation and provided the complainant with marked bills, which were later handed to the policeman.
The constable was subsequently intercepted by investigators, and the marked money was reportedly recovered from his pocket.
He was later arrested and remains in custody as investigations continue.
