Mandeville, Jamaica — Police in Mandeville shot and killed a man on Monday morning after he allegedly attacked his elderly father with a machete at their home on DeCarteret Road.
Deputy Superintendent Dennis Simmonds, Crime Officer for Manchester, confirmed the incident, which occurred around 8:00 a.m. The deceased has been identified as 50-year-old Okarie Gayle.
According to reports, Okarie was using a machete to inflict wounds on his 77-year-old father, George Gayle, when law enforcement was called to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found George lying on the ground, bleeding, while Okarie stood over him with a machete raised.
“The cops instructed Okarie to drop the weapon, but he refused and was postured as if he was about to inflict further chop wounds on George Gayle,” Simmonds stated.
In an effort to prevent further harm, the police opened fire, hitting Okarie. Both men were transported to the Mandeville Regional Hospital, where Okarie was pronounced dead. George is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be in serious but stable condition.
