Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Announces Resignation Amid Political Crisis

OTTAWA, Canada — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his intention to step down as Canada’s leader after the ruling Liberal Party selects a new leader. The announcement, made Monday in Ottawa, marks the culmination of months of political turmoil, declining poll numbers, and internal party divisions.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister, after the party selects its next leader,” said Trudeau, who has led Canada since 2015. While no timeline was specified, Trudeau assured Canadians that the leadership race would be “a robust, nationwide competitive process.”

Until a new leader is chosen, Trudeau will remain in office as a caretaker prime minister, a role that will see him navigate the initial dealings with incoming US President Donald Trump’s administration. Trump’s proposed 25% tariff on Canadian imports looms as a significant threat to Canada’s economy, and Trudeau has vowed to retaliate.

Trudeau’s resignation follows the abrupt departure of Chrystia Freeland, his former finance minister and deputy prime minister, in December. Freeland’s resignation letter criticized Trudeau for prioritizing political optics over sound economic management, citing a costly Christmas tax holiday as a misstep.

The political crisis deepened when Trudeau’s Liberal Party narrowly survived three non-confidence votes in parliament late last year. The party’s minority government, propped up by an agreement with the left-wing New Democratic Party (NDP), appeared increasingly fragile. In December, the NDP announced it would vote to topple Trudeau at the next opportunity.

To buy time, Trudeau secured permission from Canada’s governor general to suspend parliamentary business until March 24, giving the Liberals a window to select a new leader while staving off an immediate challenge from the opposition.

The race to lead the Liberal Party is expected to be expedited, with political experts suggesting it could take as little as four months. Among the frontrunners are Chrystia Freeland, despite her critical exit, and former Bank of England and Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney.

Lori Turnbull, a political science professor at Dalhousie University, stressed the urgency of the leadership transition. “If they don’t have a new leader for the next election, then there’s no point,” she said
