Jamaica – Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith has accused the People’s National Party (PNP) of trying to gain power by dragging the name of Prime Minister Andrew Holness through the mud.
During Saturday’s national debate, Johnson Smith responded to PNP’s Sophia Frazer-Binns, who questioned Holness’ suitability to run in the upcoming General Election, pointing to his financial declarations and matters involving the Integrity Commission.
“The PNP has no answers to the JLP’s achievements. Their only path to Jamaica House is by attacking the PM’s reputation,” said Johnson Smith.
She argued that the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has done more to strengthen anti-corruption efforts than any previous administration. In contrast, she pointed to numerous scandals under former PNP governments — including the Cuban light bulb, NSWMA, and Manchester Parish Council fraud — claiming Jamaica recorded its lowest scores on the corruption index during those years.
Johnson Smith insisted no report has found PM Holness guilty of any wrongdoing. “There is no finding. The PNP needs to stop lying about 28 bank accounts. That is simply false,” she declared.
In response, the PNP’s Raymond Pryce hit back, accusing Johnson Smith of twisting facts, and reminded viewers that Holness once took the Integrity Commission to court over a clause he claimed to have created.
The war of words continues as the island moves closer to the September 3 polls.
