It’s official! Prime Minister and Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) leader, Dr. Andrew Holness, has confirmed that the long-awaited general election date will be announced this Sunday at a massive green-clad rally in the heart of Half-Way Tree, St. Andrew.
Thousands of Labourites are expected to flood the streets in a show of strength as the JLP gears up to ignite its campaign machinery into full swing.
Dr. Holness made the big confirmation during a high-level meeting of the party’s Central Executive on Saturday, setting the stage for what’s expected to be one of the most highly charged elections since the party swept into office in 2016.
With all 63 JLP candidates now confirmed for the upcoming polls, the prime minister is urging his team to hit the ground with humility, grace, and grit.
“We must continue to work hard to improve more lives in Jamaica,” Holness told his party faithful, while encouraging candidates to tackle problems in their constituencies and carry themselves with decency, decorum, and professionalism on the campaign trail.
The JLP leader made it clear: the campaign will be riding strong on the government’s track record — boasting over 20 straight quarters of economic growth, no new taxes in eight years, and a significant slash in violent crime, including murders.
Holness also highlighted historic gains in employment, a drop in poverty, and relief measures to ease cost of living pressures — including a massive hike in the minimum wage, a revamped income tax threshold, and the government’s Solidarity Programme aimed at supporting the most vulnerable.
Saturday’s Central Executive gathering — the second highest decision-making body in the JLP — checked off all the constitutional boxes needed ahead of election day.
Now, all eyes turn to Sunday. When Dr. Holness takes the stage at Half-Way Tree, the countdown begins to Jamaica’s 18th General Election since Universal Adult Suffrage in 1944.
